Reset: Press the button firmly until it clicks. Turn ignition ON for 10 seconds, then start.

Engine cranks but the Ford Fiesta won't start. You had a bump — maybe just a bad pothole or a minor parking knock. Now nothing.

You've found the right page. The Ford Fiesta inertia switch (also called the fuel cut-off switch or fuel pump shut-off switch) is one of the most searched car topics in the UK and Europe, because Fiestas are everywhere and the switch trips easily.

In fact, I've personally dealt with this on my own Fiesta 2006 after a minor collision — it's what inspired me to write about it in the first place. Finding the switch was the hard part. Resetting it took seconds.

Let's dive right in.

In this guide, you'll learn:

Exact Location of the Ford Fiesta Inertia Switch

The Ford Fiesta fuel cut-off switch is located behind the passenger-side glove box, on or near the firewall (the bulkhead between the engine bay and the cabin).

It's a small cylindrical device approximately 3–4 cm tall with a red or yellow rubber button on top. The switch sits in a bracket on the firewall, and you can't see it until you drop the glove box down.

On right-hand-drive Fiestas (UK, Ireland, Australia), the passenger is on the LEFT side of the car — so you're looking behind the LEFT-side glove box.

Step-by-Step: How to Access the Fiesta Inertia Switch

  1. Open the passenger door and fully open the glove box
  2. Press in firmly on both sides of the glove box simultaneously — this releases the stop tabs and allows the glovebox to drop down all the way, exposing the cavity behind it
  3. Look into the space behind the glove box toward the firewall. Use a torch — it's dark in there
  4. You'll see the inertia switch mounted on the firewall. It's usually on the right-hand side of the cavity (toward the centre of the car on LHD, toward the door on RHD)
  5. The red or yellow button will be raised (popped up) if the switch has been tripped

You don't need any tools for this. The whole process from opening the door to reaching the switch should take under 2 minutes.

How to Reset the Ford Fiesta Inertia Switch

  1. Check for fuel leaks first. Smell around the engine bay and under the car. If you detect petrol or see a wet patch under the vehicle, do NOT reset. Have the car recovered and inspected for fuel line damage.
  2. Press the button firmly downward until you feel it click into the reset position. It should stay depressed and not spring back up.
  3. Turn the ignition to ON (all dashboard warning lights on, but don't start the engine). Hold for 10 seconds — you should hear the fuel pump prime: a short 2-second hum from under the rear of the car.
  4. Try to start the engine. It may take 2–3 cranking attempts as fuel pressure rebuilds.
  5. If it starts but immediately cuts out — turn the ignition back to ON for another 10-second prime and try again.

If the button springs back up after pressing, or won't stay clicked down, the switch itself has failed. Replacement inertia switches for the Ford Fiesta are widely available for £12–£25. Part to search: Ford Fiesta inertia switch, or Ford part reference 1078709.

Ford Fiesta Inertia Switch Location by Generation

The Fiesta ran from 1976 through 2023. Here's how the switch location differs by generation:

Fiesta Mk4 (1995–2002) and Mk5 (2002–2008)

Behind the passenger glove box on the firewall — this is the classic location and the one I personally confirmed on my Mk5 2006 after a crash. Fully accessible by dropping the glove box. The switch has a yellow rubber cap on most Mk4/5 versions.

Fiesta Mk6 / Mk6.5 (2008–2017)

Same location — behind passenger glove box, firewall-mounted. The glove box drop method works identically. Some Mk6 versions have the switch slightly higher up on the firewall than earlier models.

Fiesta Mk7 / Mk8 (2017–2023)

Same general location (passenger side, behind glove box), but access may require removing one or two push-fit trim clips in addition to dropping the glove box. The switch design changed slightly on the Mk7/8 to a more compact unit, but the reset procedure is identical.

Ford Fiesta Van (Courier Van)

Same location as the equivalent passenger Fiesta generation. The van body style doesn't change the switch location.

Ford Fiesta Still Won't Start After Resetting?

You've reset the switch, heard the fuel pump prime, but the Fiesta still won't start. Here's the checklist:

  • No fuel pump prime sound? Check fuse F22 in the passenger compartment fuse box (label: fuel pump or EMS). Also check the fuel pump relay in the engine bay fuse box.
  • Engine cranks but fires for 1 second then dies? This is often the immobiliser. Try locking and unlocking with the key, or check the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) indicator on the dash — a flashing padlock means the transponder isn't being read.
  • Engine cranks but never fires at all? Plug in an OBD2 scanner and check for codes. Crank position sensor faults (P0335, P0336) are a common Ford Fiesta no-start cause that mimics a tripped inertia switch.
  • Multiple warning lights on? A strong impact can damage sensors and wiring beyond just tripping the inertia switch. If you have collision damage, a full diagnostic scan is necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the inertia switch on a Ford Fiesta?

Behind the passenger-side glove box, mounted on the firewall. Open the glove box and press in both sides to drop it fully down — the switch is visible in the cavity behind, with a red or yellow button on top.

How do I reset the Ford Fiesta fuel cut-off switch?

Check for fuel leaks first. Then press the red/yellow button firmly until it clicks. Turn the ignition to ON for 10 seconds to prime the fuel pump. Try starting — it may take 2–3 attempts.

Is the Ford Fiesta inertia switch the same on all years?

The location is the same on all Mk4 through Mk8 Fiestas (1995–2023) — behind the passenger glovebox. The exact switch design and glove box access method varies slightly by generation, but the principle and location are consistent.

Can the Ford Fiesta inertia switch trip without a crash?

Yes. A severe pothole, harsh kerb impact, or rough road can trip it. On older Fiestas the switch can also become hypersensitive with age. If your Fiesta intermittently refuses to start after rough roads, check the inertia switch first.

What is the part number for a Ford Fiesta inertia switch?

Ford part reference 1078709 fits many Mk4–Mk6 Fiestas. Always cross-reference with your year and engine to confirm compatibility. Aftermarket equivalents are widely available for £12–£25.
