Ford Focus inertia switch (fuel cut-off switch) location: Behind the passenger-side kick panel on Mk1 (1998–2005) and Mk2 (2005–2011) Focus. Behind the glove box on Mk3 (2011–2018) — drop the glove box to access.
Reset: Press the red plunger until it clicks flush. Turn ignition ON for 10 seconds, then start.

The Ford Focus has been one of Europe's best-selling cars for two decades — which means a lot of owners eventually meet its inertia switch after a kerb strike, a jolt in a parking lot, or a hard speed bump. The fix is nearly always free and takes 30 seconds, once you know where to look.

This guide covers every Focus generation from 1998 Mk1 through 2018 Mk3, including ST and RS variants.

In this guide:

What the Ford Focus Inertia Switch Does

The inertia switch is a mechanical cut-out wired in series with the fuel pump's power supply. A weighted ball sits in a magnetic detent inside the sealed housing. A sudden deceleration — crash, heavy pothole strike, even a hard kerb hit — dislodges the ball, breaking the circuit and killing the fuel pump. The engine runs for a second or two on residual rail pressure, then shuts down. It is a passive safety device meant to prevent fuel spraying from ruptured lines after an accident.

Ford uses the same basic switch design across Focus, Fiesta, Mondeo, Ranger, F-150, and the Transit. The physical location and reset procedure are nearly identical. For the cross-model overview, see our master fuel cut-off switch guide covering 20+ makes.

Location by Generation

GenerationYearsLocation
Focus Mk11998–2005Behind passenger-side kick panel. Open passenger door, pull plastic kick panel (3 clips) toward centre of cab. Switch mounted on firewall, red button up
Focus Mk2 / Mk2.5 facelift2005–2011Same as Mk1 — passenger-side kick panel. On 2008+ facelift, panel has 4 clips instead of 3
Focus Mk32011–2018Behind the passenger-side glove box. Empty glove box, squeeze the sides inward to drop the box, switch is on the firewall upper-right (LHD) / upper-left (RHD UK)
Focus Mk3 facelift2014–2018Same as Mk3 — behind glove box
Focus Mk4 / Active2018+ECU-controlled crash cut on higher-trim models — no mechanical switch. Base trim still has one behind glove box
Focus Electric (BEV)2011–2018No fuel inertia switch — battery management handles crash cut

Focus Mk1 / Mk2 — Passenger Kick Panel

Slide the passenger seat all the way back. Open the passenger door. The kick panel is the plastic trim to the right of where the passenger's feet rest, just behind the door sill. Pull firmly toward the centre of the cab — no screws, just plastic clips that release by pull. On older Mk1 Focuses the clips can crack, so go slowly.

Behind the panel: a 5cm black plastic cylinder on the firewall, red button on top, two wires going to a connector on the side. If the red button is RAISED (proud of the housing), the switch has tripped. If it is FLUSH, the switch is not the cause of your no-start.

Focus Mk3 — Behind the Glove Box

Empty the glove box. Close the side damper. Squeeze the glove box sides inward to release the stops; let the box swing down. The switch is mounted on the firewall upper-right on LHD cars (driver's side on RHD UK / Ireland / Australia). Red button faces up.

Step-by-Step Reset

  1. Turn ignition OFF, remove key (or foot off brake for keyless).
  2. Access the switch per the location guide above.
  3. Press the red button straight down firmly until it clicks and sits flush with the housing. Single firm press.
  4. Turn ignition to position II (ON, not START). You should hear the fuel pump prime — a 2-second whirr from the rear of the car.
  5. Wait 10 seconds for the fuel rail to pressurize.
  6. Start the engine. Should fire within 1–3 cranks.

Why It Trips Without a Crash

  • Hard pothole strikes — Focus suspension is firm, a 10cm pothole at 50+ km/h can do it
  • Kerb strikes while parking — lateral G-load is enough
  • Speed bumps taken too fast, especially on Focus ST with stiffer suspension
  • Dropping off a jack during a tyre change
  • Rear-end parking bumps — even a 5 mph tap can trigger it
  • Age and corrosion — on older Mk1 Focuses, the internal magnet weakens and the switch trips on normal vibration

If your Focus trips more than once every few months without real cause, replace the switch. Ford part 1S7T-9341-AA fits Mk2/Mk3 Focus (~£30-£45 from Ford dealer; much less on eBay).

Still Won't Start After Reset

  1. Listen for the fuel pump prime. Ignition ON, no crank — should hear a 2-second whirr. No sound = no power reaching the pump.
  2. Check the fuel pump fuse. Mk1/Mk2 Focus: fuse 21 (15A) in passenger compartment fusebox. Mk3 Focus: fuse F34 (15A) in under-bonnet fusebox.
  3. Swap the fuel pump relay with an identical unit from another slot (horn, A/C). If the car fires up, replace the relay (~£8).
  4. Battery voltage. Below 10V during cranking, the PCM won't enable the fuel pump. Load-test the battery.
  5. Crank position sensor — common failure past 150,000 km on Focus 1.6/1.8 petrol. Cranks but never catches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 2008 Focus have an inertia switch?

Yes — the 2008 Ford Focus is a Mk2 facelift; the switch is behind the passenger-side kick panel, same location as the earlier Mk2. Pull off the plastic kick panel (4 clips on facelift) to access.

Where is the fuel cut-off switch on a 2014 Ford Focus?

Behind the passenger-side glove box. The 2014 Focus is a Mk3 facelift; drop the glove box by squeezing the sides inward, and the switch is on the firewall upper-right (on left-hand-drive cars).

Does the Focus ST have the same inertia switch as the base Focus?

Yes, across Mk2 ST, Mk2.5 ST, Mk3 ST, and Mk3 RS. The ST and RS use the same chassis electronics as the base Focus. Location is unchanged — kick panel on Mk2 ST, glove box on Mk3 ST/RS.

My 2019 Focus does not have a physical inertia switch — is that right?

Likely correct on higher trims. The 2018+ Mk4 Focus uses ECU-controlled crash cut based on airbag signal on ST-Line, Vignale, and Active trims. Base Focus Style / Trend still has the mechanical switch behind the glove box. Check your handbook to confirm.

Where is the switch on the Focus Electric (BEV)?

There is none. The Focus Electric has no fuel system — the battery management unit handles crash cut via airbag signal.

Can the Ford Focus Haynes manual tell me the exact location?

Yes, but the Haynes diagrams sometimes show the Mk1 location (kick panel) for all years, which is wrong for Mk3. Our table above is more accurate for 2011+ cars. Always cross-check with the actual trim panel.
