Peugeot 307 Fuel Cut-Off Switch Location & Reset Guide
Peugeot 307 won't start after a bump? The inertia switch is behind the passenger glovebox. Find it, press the button, and you're back on the road in minutes.

Reset: Press the button firmly until it clicks. Turn ignition ON for 10 seconds, then start.
Your Peugeot 307 cranks perfectly but refuses to start. You had a minor bump, clipped a kerb, or hit a bad pothole — and now nothing.
Here's the good news: this is almost certainly the fuel cut-off switch (inertia switch). It trips on impact to protect you in a crash by cutting the fuel pump. And resetting it takes about 30 seconds — once you know where to find it.
Let's dive right in.
In this guide, you'll learn:
Exact Location on Peugeot 307
The Peugeot 307 inertia fuel cut-off switch is located behind the passenger-side glove box, on the firewall (the metal wall separating the cabin from the engine bay).
Specifically: when you open the glove box and look toward the left side (toward the centre of the dash), you'll see the switch mounted on the firewall at approximately knee height. It's a small cylindrical unit with a red rubber button on top.
If the switch has been tripped, the red button will be in the raised (popped up) position. In its normal reset state, the button sits flush or slightly below the top of the casing.

On right-hand-drive Peugeot 307 models (UK, Ireland, Australia), the passenger side is the left side of the car — the switch will still be behind the glove box, which is on the left in RHD vehicles.
How to Access the Peugeot 307 Inertia Switch
- Open the passenger door and fully open the glove box
- Look behind and to the left side of the glove box cavity — toward the firewall and centre of the dashboard
- You should be able to see (or at least reach) the switch without removing anything — on many 307s the switch is accessible just by opening the glove box fully and looking in with a torch
- If the switch isn't immediately visible, press in both sides of the glove box to release the stop tabs and let it drop down fully — this opens up the cavity and gives much better access
- The switch is a small cylindrical plastic unit, roughly 3–4 cm tall, with a red button on top. On some versions it has a yellow rubber cap instead

A torch or phone light is essential — the area behind the glove box is quite dark. The switch is typically within arm's reach once the glove box is fully dropped down.
How to Reset the Peugeot 307 Fuel Cut-Off Switch
- Before anything: check for fuel leaks. Smell under the bonnet and around the car. If you smell petrol strongly or see a wet patch, do NOT reset — the switch may have protected you from a genuine fuel line rupture. Call for recovery.
- Press the red button firmly downward until you feel and/or hear a click. The button should now sit flush or slightly recessed.
- Turn ignition to position II (ON, not start) and hold for 10 seconds. You should hear the fuel pump prime — a quiet hum from under the car or rear of the vehicle.
- Try starting the engine. It may need 2–3 cranking attempts while fuel pressure builds back up.
- If it starts and immediately cuts out — turn ignition to ON again for another 10 seconds and retry.
Button won't stay down? If the button pops back up every time you press it, the spring mechanism inside the switch is either worn out or the car's safety system is still sensing a problem. A replacement inertia switch for the 307 costs around €15–€30.
Car Still Won't Start After Resetting?
You've reset the switch and the 307 still cranks but won't fire. Work through this in order:
- Listen for the fuel pump on ignition ON. A brief 2-second hum means the pump is running. Silence means it's not — check the fuel pump fuse (in the engine bay fuse box, labelled "fuel pump" or "injection") and the fuel pump relay.
- Check for stored fault codes with an OBD2 scanner. A failed crankshaft position sensor, camshaft sensor, or immobiliser fault can all cause a no-start that looks identical to a tripped inertia switch.
- Try cycling the ignition 5 times (ON → OFF → ON → OFF...) before cranking. This fully primes the fuel rail on stubborn cases.
- Check the fuel level. The 307 fuel gauge can occasionally misread, especially if the car has been parked on a slope.
Peugeot 307 SW Estate and CC Cabriolet
The 307 SW (estate) and 307 CC (cabriolet) use the same inertia switch location as the standard hatchback — behind the passenger glove box on the firewall. There is no difference in switch location or reset procedure between body styles.
The switch location is also the same for all engine variants: 1.4, 1.6, 2.0 petrol, and 1.4 HDi, 1.6 HDi, 2.0 HDi diesel. Note: on diesel versions the inertia switch is still fitted to prevent fire risk even though diesel fuel is less flammable than petrol.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where exactly is the fuel cut-off switch on a Peugeot 307?
Behind the passenger-side glove box, on the firewall. Open the glove box fully (press in the sides to drop it down completely) and look toward the left side of the cavity toward the centre console — the switch is mounted there with a red reset button on top.
How do I know if the Peugeot 307 inertia switch has tripped?
The red button on top will be in the raised position. The engine will crank normally but not start, and you won't hear the fuel pump priming when you turn the ignition on.
Can the 307 fuel cut-off switch trip without a crash?
Yes. A hard pothole, kerb strike, or even aggressive off-road driving can trip it. On high-mileage 307s the switch can also become overly sensitive with age.
Does the Peugeot 307 HDi diesel have a fuel cut-off switch?
Yes — all 307 variants including HDi diesel have the inertia switch fitted. The location and reset procedure is identical to the petrol versions.
How much does a Peugeot 307 inertia switch replacement cost?
A replacement switch costs €15–€30 for an aftermarket part. It's a simple unplug-and-swap with no special tools required. The labour time is under 30 minutes.
