C0281 on a Chevrolet Sonic means: Brake Pedal Position (BPP) Switch Circuit — the EBCM received a bad or missing signal from the brake-light switch.
Fix on the Sonic: 75% of cases are resolved by replacing the brake-light switch. Part ~$15–$30. Time: 10 minutes.

The Chevrolet Sonic (Aveo successor in North America, Holden Barina in Australia, Opel/Vauxhall Corsa cousin in Europe) shares most of its GM Gamma II platform electrics with the Aveo and Cobalt — which is why the C0281 code behaves almost identically across all three models. The Sonic's only platform-specific twist is the brake-light switch bracket, which is slightly different from the Aveo's and easier to replace.

In this guide:

What C0281 Means on a Sonic

C0281 in the Sonic's EBCM reads as "Brake Pedal Position Switch Circuit — Malfunction." The ABS module expected a clean HIGH or LOW signal from the brake-light switch (pressed vs. released) and either got a floating signal, intermittent drop-out, or nothing at all. Because the EBCM uses brake-pedal input for traction control, ABS, and StabiliTrak arbitration, it stores the code and disables all three as a safety fallback.

This is the same fault mechanism as on the C0281 master guide, Chevy Aveo, and Cobalt. See also the related C0561 code which often appears alongside C0281 on Sonics with multiple faults.

Symptoms on the Sonic

  • ABS light and Traction Control light on together
  • "Service StabiliTrak" or "Service Traction Control" message on the DIC
  • Cruise control will not engage — disabled when the EBCM flags the fault
  • Brake lights may not work (if the switch has failed mechanically) or may work intermittently
  • Automatic transmission shift interlock may engage — gear lever stuck in Park because the TCM cannot verify the brake is pressed
  • Engine runs normally — C0281 is a chassis-systems disable, not a powertrain fault

Causes Ranked by Frequency on the Sonic

1. Brake-light switch failure — 75% of Sonic cases

The factory brake-light switch (GM part 13579079 or the updated 13500861) uses a plunger mechanism that wears and develops inconsistent contact past 60,000–80,000 miles. On Sonics from 2012–2015 in particular, the switch's mounting bracket holds it slightly off-centre, which accelerates the wear. Symptom: pressing the brake pedal lightly activates brake lights intermittently; C0281 trips on the next ignition cycle.

2. Wiring harness connector — 15% of cases

The two-wire connector at the switch body can develop corrosion, especially on Sonics in salt-belt states (New England, Midwest, Canada). Unplug, inspect pins for green oxide, clean with contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease.

3. Brake-light fuse or relay — 5% of cases

Fuse F15 (10A) in the Sonic passenger fusebox feeds the brake-light circuit. A blown fuse causes the switch signal to float.

4. EBCM internal fault — less than 5% of cases

Rare on the Sonic but possible past 150,000 miles. Before replacing the $600+ EBCM, confirm the switch, connector, and fuse are all good.

Step-by-Step Fix: Brake-Light Switch Replacement

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Wait 60 seconds.
  2. Remove the driver-side lower dash trim under the steering column. Two plastic clips on the Sonic — pull down firmly.
  3. Locate the brake-light switch on the brake pedal bracket. A 4cm black plastic unit with a push-rod plunger resting against the pedal lever, and a two-wire connector on the side.
  4. Unplug the connector. Squeeze the release tab on the side, pull straight.
  5. Twist the old switch 90° (counter-clockwise) to release from the bracket. Pull out.
  6. Install the new switch by inserting into the bracket at the 90° rotated position, then twist clockwise to lock. The plunger should self-adjust as you press the brake pedal firmly 2–3 times.
  7. Reconnect the connector.
  8. Reconnect the battery and clear codes with an OBD-II scanner.
  9. Drive a 20-minute mixed cycle to let the EBCM retest. Lights should stay off.

Repair Cost on the Sonic

FixDIY costShop cost
Brake-light switch replacement$15–$30 (part only)$80–$140 (0.5 hr labor + part)
Connector clean + dielectric grease$5$80
Brake-light fuse$2$40
EBCM replacement + programming$280–$500 + dealer programming fee$800–$1,200

The brake-light switch is the single biggest cost-saving opportunity on a Sonic with C0281 — a $15 part and 10 minutes of work fix three out of four cases. Do not let a shop quote you a $600+ EBCM replacement without confirming the switch first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Sonic fail inspection with C0281 stored?

In US states with combined safety + emissions inspections, yes — the ABS warning light being on triggers a safety inspection failure. In emissions-only states, C-codes do not affect the test.

Can I drive my Sonic with C0281 active?

Yes, at normal speeds for short distances. Base braking works. You lose ABS, traction control, and StabiliTrak. Avoid ice, snow, and heavy rain until fixed.

Does the Sonic RS performance variant have the same fix?

Yes. The Sonic RS uses the same EBCM, BCM, and brake-light switch as the base LS / LT / LTZ trims. The RS's 1.4L turbo engine does not change the chassis electronics.

My Sonic's C0281 appeared with C0561 — what does that mean?

C0281 and C0561 together means the EBCM lost two inputs: the brake-light signal AND clean serial data from another module. Usually indicates a deeper wiring fault or a weak battery causing voltage drift. Start with the battery load test.

Does the Holden Barina (Australian Sonic) share the same fix?

Yes. The Holden Barina (2012–2018, when Holden still existed) is a rebadged Sonic with identical chassis electronics. Same switch, same location, same reset.

Is the Sonic brake-light switch the same part as the Cruze?

Yes — GM shares the same switch across Sonic, Cruze, Cobalt, and the later Trax. Part 13500861 fits all of them.
