Renault Clio Fuel Cut-Off Switch Location & Reset Guide
Renault Clio won't start after a bump? The inertia switch location differs by generation. Here's exactly where to find it on Clio II, III, IV and V.
DrashcoRenault Clio fuel cut-off switch location: Passenger side footwell, under the carpet near the firewall — or behind the lower kick panel trim.
Reset: Press the red or yellow button firmly until it clicks. Turn ignition ON for 10 seconds, then start.
Renault Clio won't start after a bump or a bad pothole? Cranks fine but nothing happens?
The fuel cut-off switch — Renault's inertia switch — is almost certainly the answer. It kills the fuel pump on impact to prevent fire after a collision. And it's one of the easier fixes on the Clio, once you know exactly where to look.
Let's dive right in.
In this guide, you'll learn:
Renault Clio Fuel Cut-Off Switch Location by Generation

Renault Clio II (1998–2005)
The Clio II inertia switch is located in the passenger side footwell, under the carpet near the firewall. Lift the carpet in the front passenger footwell and look toward the base of the firewall — the switch is mounted there, or tucked behind the lower kick panel trim on the passenger side.
Renault Clio III (2005–2012)
Same general location as the Clio II — passenger side footwell, under the carpet or behind the lower kick panel. On some Clio III variants the switch moved to behind the glove box (similar to the Dacia Sandero, which shares this platform). Check the footwell first, then drop the glove box if not found there.
Renault Clio IV (2012–2019)
On the Clio IV, the inertia switch is typically behind the passenger glove box on the firewall — consistent with other Renault-Dacia platform vehicles of this era. Drop the glove box (press in both sides) and look toward the firewall.
Renault Clio V (2019–present)
On the latest Clio V, Renault moved toward a more electronically-managed fuel safety system on some variants. If you can't find a physical inertia switch, your model may use an ECU-controlled fuel cutoff instead — in which case a reset may require clearing a fault code with an OBD2 scanner rather than pressing a button.
How to Find and Access the Clio Inertia Switch
- Start with the passenger footwell. Remove the floor mat, then lift the carpet edge near the firewall — feel along the base of the firewall for a small cylindrical device with a rubber button on top.
- If not there, try the kick panel. The lower plastic trim panel at the base of the passenger dashboard usually clips off by hand or with one plastic trim tool.
- If still not found, drop the glove box. Open it fully, press in both sides to release the stop tabs and let it hang down, then look at the firewall behind the cavity with a torch.
- The switch is a small plastic cylinder approximately 3–4 cm tall with a red or yellow button on top and a wiring connector at the base.

How to Reset the Renault Clio Fuel Cut-Off Switch
- Check for fuel leaks first — smell the engine bay and check under the car. If you can smell petrol or see a wet patch, do NOT reset. Get the car recovered.
- Press the button firmly downward until you feel and hear a click. The button should remain pressed in.
- Turn ignition to ON (all dash lights on, don't start). Wait 10 seconds — listen for the fuel pump priming (a brief hum from under the rear of the car).
- Try to start. It may take 2–3 cranking attempts.
Button won't stay clicked down? The switch spring has failed. Renault Clio inertia switches are available for €10–€20 aftermarket and swap in under 20 minutes.
Still Won't Start After Resetting?
- No fuel pump priming sound? Check the fuel pump fuse and relay. On the Clio, the fuse box is in the engine bay — check the label on the lid or your owner's manual for the correct fuse.
- Immobiliser light flashing? A red or amber padlock symbol flashing on the dash means the immobiliser isn't reading the key transponder. Try locking and unlocking the car, wait 30 seconds, retry.
- OBD codes? Scan for codes — P0340 (camshaft sensor) and P0335 (crankshaft sensor) are common Clio no-start codes that mimic a tripped inertia switch.
- Clio II specific: The pre-heating relay and fuel pump relay on the Clio II share a fuse that can blow after an impact. Check fuse F7 (or equivalent in your variant) in the engine bay fuse box.
Renault Megane, Scenic and Other Models
The Renault Megane II and III use the same inertia switch principle, typically located in the passenger footwell under the carpet or behind the kick panel — same method as the Clio II/III. The Renault Scenic follows the same convention.
The Renault Kangoo van has the switch behind the driver-side kick panel on most versions (same side as the driver on LHD vehicles).

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the fuel cut-off switch on a Renault Clio?
On Clio II and III (1998–2012): under the carpet in the passenger footwell near the firewall, or behind the lower kick panel. On Clio IV (2012–2019): behind the passenger glove box on the firewall. Drop the glove box by pressing in both sides.
How do I reset the Renault Clio inertia switch?
Check for fuel leaks. Press the red or yellow button firmly until it clicks. Turn ignition to ON for 10 seconds to prime the fuel pump, then try to start. Allow 2–3 cranking attempts.
Does the Renault Clio V have an inertia switch?
Some Clio V variants have moved to ECU-controlled fuel safety systems without a physical reset button. If you cannot find an inertia switch on a 2019+ Clio, connect an OBD2 scanner and check for crash-related fault codes that prevent fuel delivery.
Can the Renault Clio inertia switch trip without a crash?
Yes. A severe pothole, harsh kerb strike, or rough road surface can trip it, especially on older Clios. If the car intermittently refuses to start after rough driving, the inertia switch should be the first thing you check.
