Skoda Octavia Fuel Cut-Off Switch Location & Reset (1996-2020)

Skoda Octavia fuel cut-off switch (palivový vypínač) location: Behind the passenger-side kick panel on Mk1 (1996–2010). Behind the glove box on Mk2 / Mk3 TDI diesel only (2004–2020). Mk4 (2020+) uses ECU crash cut on all variants.
Reset: Press the red plunger until it clicks flush. Turn ignition ON for 10 seconds, then start.

The Skoda Octavia shares the VAG PQ34 / PQ35 / MQB platform with the VW Golf, Audi A3, and SEAT Leon — which means identical inertia switch behavior across all four. If your Octavia cranks but won't start after a kerb strike, the model year and fuel type determine whether you're looking for a physical button or scanning for codes.

In this guide:

What the Octavia Inertia Switch Does

The mechanical fuel cut-off (Skoda workshop term: palivový vypínač) interrupts power to the fuel pump in a crash. A weighted ball inside a sealed cylinder is held by a magnetic detent; sudden deceleration dislodges the ball and breaks the circuit. Same identical hardware as VW Golf, Audi A3, SEAT Leon. For cross-make overview see our master fuel cut-off switch guide.

Mk1 — Passenger Kick Panel

Open the passenger door, slide seat back. Pull plastic kick panel toward centre of cab — 2 to 3 plastic clips release. Switch is a 5cm black cylinder on firewall, red plunger up. If raised, tripped.

Mk2 / Mk3 TDI — Behind Glove Box

Empty glove box, squeeze side stops, let it hang. Switch on firewall upper-right (LHD) / upper-left (RHD UK / Ireland). Red plunger up.

Step-by-Step Reset

  1. Turn ignition OFF. Remove key.
  2. Access the switch per location guide above.
  3. Press red plunger straight down firmly until it clicks flush.
  4. Turn ignition ON (position II). Listen for fuel pump prime — 2-second whirr from rear.
  5. Wait 10 seconds for rail pressure.
  6. Start engine. Should fire in 1–3 cranks.

Why It Trips Without a Crash

  • Hard pothole strikes at speed
  • Kerb strikes while parking
  • Speed bumps taken too fast
  • Dropping off a jack during tyre change
  • Old Mk1 Octavia (Tour): internal magnet weakens past 20 years, switch trips on normal vibration. Replace if recurring.

Mk4 — No Mechanical Switch (What To Do)

From 2020 onwards, Octavia Mk4 (and all VAG MQB Evo platform cars) removed the mechanical inertia switch entirely. Crash detection is handled by the airbag control unit (SDM) which sends a CAN message to the ECU to cut fuel pump power. After an airbag deployment OR hard impact that triggers the SDM, the ECU stores a crash code and refuses to enable the fuel pump until cleared.

If your Mk4 Octavia cranks but won't start after a hard knock:

  1. Connect a VCDS / OBDeleven / VAG-compatible scanner
  2. Read codes from SDM (airbag) module — look for crash-event codes
  3. Read codes from engine ECU — fuel-pump-disabled code will be present
  4. Clear the codes (some require dealer-level VCDS due to immobilizer integration)
  5. Cycle ignition; engine should start

Independent VAG specialist clears codes for €30–€60. Dealer charges €80–€150.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the fuel cut-off switch on a 2008 Skoda Octavia?

The 2008 Octavia is Mk2. If TDI diesel, behind the passenger-side glove box. If petrol (1.4 TSI, 1.6 FSI, 2.0 FSI) — no mechanical switch; need a VAG scanner.

Does the Octavia RS / vRS have an inertia switch?

RS / vRS shares the same chassis electronics as base Octavia for that generation. Mk2 vRS petrol = no mechanical switch. Mk3 vRS petrol = no mechanical switch. Mk2/Mk3 TDI vRS = behind glove box.

My Octavia Combi (estate) has a different layout — is the switch in the same place?

Yes. Combi shares the same dashboard and firewall layout as the hatch — switch is in the same location for the same model year.

Does the Octavia Scout (4×4) share the same switch?

Yes. Scout is just a Combi with raised suspension and 4WD; chassis electronics are identical. Switch is in the same place as Combi for that generation.

Can I bypass the inertia switch on my older Octavia?

Technically yes by bridging the two terminals, but this removes the post-crash safety cut. Fuel will continue to spray from ruptured lines after a real accident. Not recommended for any road-going car.

Is the Octavia switch the same part as the VW Golf?

Yes — same VAG part number across the platform. Octavia Mk1 / Golf Mk4 / Audi A3 Mk1 / SEAT Leon Mk1 share the same switch. Mk2 TDI variants also identical. See our VW Golf inertia switch guide for cross-reference.
