C0281 on Chevy HHR: Causes, Fix & Reset (2006-2011)
Drashco
C0281 on a Chevrolet HHR means: Brake Pedal Position Switch Circuit — the ABS / EBCM received a bad signal from the brake-light switch.
Fix on the HHR: 70% of cases resolve with a brake-light switch swap. Part ~$15–$30. Time: 15 minutes.
The Chevy HHR (Heritage High Roof) shares almost everything under its retro-shaped skin with the Cobalt — the Delta platform, the chassis electronics, and the same quirks. That also means the HHR has the same brake-light switch failure pattern as the Cobalt and Aveo, and the same simple $15 fix.
In this guide:
What C0281 Means on an HHR
C0281 in the HHR's EBCM reads as "Brake Pedal Position Switch Circuit — Malfunction." The ABS module expected a clean HIGH or LOW signal from the brake-light switch and either got a floating signal, intermittent drop-out, or nothing. Because the EBCM uses the brake signal for ABS arbitration, traction control, and StabiliTrak, it stores the code and disables all three.
This is the same fault mechanism as on the C0281 master guide, the Cobalt, Aveo, and the Sonic.
Symptoms on the HHR
- ABS and Traction Control lights on together
- "Service StabiliTrak" message on the DIC
- Cruise control refuses to engage
- Automatic transmission shift interlock may engage — gear lever stuck in Park
- Brake lights may work erratically — particularly on older HHRs past 80,000 miles
- Engine runs normally — no powertrain fault codes
HHR-Specific Considerations
The HHR has two quirks that affect C0281 diagnosis:
1. Brake-pedal bracket alignment
On 2006–2008 HHRs, the brake-pedal bracket is mounted slightly lower than on the Cobalt. The switch plunger sits at a subtly different angle, which accelerates wear. Expect to replace the switch around 70,000–80,000 miles on an older HHR rather than the 100,000+ miles typical on other GM compacts.
2. HHR SS performance variant
The HHR SS (2008–2010, 2.0L turbo) uses the same switch and EBCM as the base LS / LT trims. The SS's stiffer suspension and firmer brake pedal feel do not change the switch itself, but some SS owners report earlier switch wear because of harder braking loads.
3. HHR Panel (commercial van variant)
The HHR Panel (2007–2011) — the two-seat cargo variant — shares all chassis electronics with the passenger HHR. Same switch, same fix. The Panel variant is common in courier and service fleets where brake wear is accelerated by stop-and-go duty cycles.
Step-by-Step Fix: Brake-Light Switch Replacement
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Wait 60 seconds.
- Remove the driver-side lower dash panel under the steering column. HHR has three 7mm bolts plus two clips — remove bolts, pull panel down.
- Locate the brake-light switch on the brake pedal bracket. 4cm black plastic unit, plunger against pedal lever, two-wire connector on the side.
- Unplug the connector. Squeeze release tab, pull straight.
- Twist the old switch 90° counter-clockwise to release from the bracket.
- Install the new switch (GM part 13500861 or equivalent) by inserting at the 90° position and twisting clockwise to lock. Plunger self-adjusts as you press the brake pedal firmly.
- Reconnect connector and battery. Clear codes with OBD-II scanner.
- Drive 20 minutes mixed city/highway. EBCM should retest and lights should stay off.
Repair Cost on the HHR
| Fix | DIY | Shop |
| Brake-light switch replacement | $15–$30 | $80–$140 |
| Connector cleanup | $5 | $80 |
| Brake-light fuse | $2 | $40 |
| EBCM replacement | $280–$500 + programming | $800–$1,100 |
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my HHR fail inspection with C0281 active?
In states with combined safety + emissions inspections, yes — the ABS light triggers a safety failure. In emissions-only states, no.
Does the HHR SS have a different fix?
No — same switch, same location, same procedure. The SS's turbo engine does not change the chassis electronics.
Does my HHR Panel (cargo variant) share the same fix?
Yes. The HHR Panel uses identical chassis electronics to the passenger HHR. Same switch, same 10-minute fix.
My HHR's C0281 appeared after a dead battery — is that normal?
Yes, this is common on the HHR. A deep-discharge battery event can corrupt the EBCM's stored calibration. Clear codes after battery replacement; if the code does not return within 20 minutes of driving, it was a one-time fault.
Is the HHR brake-light switch the same part as the Cobalt?
Yes — GM part 13500861 fits both (as well as the Sonic, Cruze, and Trax). The HHR bracket is slightly different physically but the switch itself is interchangeable.
Can a failed brake-light switch cause the HHR to stall?
No, not directly. C0281 only disables chassis safety systems (ABS/TC/StabiliTrak). Engine operation is independent. If your HHR is stalling AND throwing C0281, you have two separate faults.
