C0561 on a Chevrolet Traverse means: ABS and StabiliTrak disabled because the EBCM received invalid serial data from the BCM on the CAN bus.
Fix on the Traverse: 70% of cases resolve with a BCM ground strap cleanup. Cost: $0. Time: 30 minutes.

The Chevrolet Traverse (GM Lambda platform 2009–2017, GM C1XX platform 2018+) shares its drivetrain and chassis electronics with the GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and the defunct Saturn Outlook. On the Traverse specifically, C0561 past 100,000 miles is almost always a BCM ground problem — the same root cause we document on the Acadia-specific guide and the master C0561 guide. The Traverse's twist is a slightly more accessible BCM ground strap than the Acadia — making the DIY fix a bit easier.

In this guide:

What C0561 Means on a Traverse

C0561 in the Traverse's EBCM reads as "System Disabled Information Stored — Invalid Serial Data Received." The ABS module tried to communicate with the BCM on the CAN bus, got corrupted data or nothing, and fell back to a safe-disabled state. ABS, traction control, and StabiliTrak all go offline until the fault clears.

This is the same fault mechanism as on the C0561 master guide, the GMC Acadia, Chevy Malibu, and Silverado.

Traverse Generation Differences

GenerationYearsPlatformPrimary C0561 Cause
Traverse 1st gen (Lambda)2009–2012LambdaBCM ground strap (70% of cases), ECM-to-EBCM connector corrosion in salt-belt states
Traverse 1st gen facelift2013–2017LambdaSame — BCM ground drift past 100,000 miles
Traverse 2nd gen (C1XX)2018–2024C1XXImproved ground routing but still fails at battery-to-chassis strap on higher-mileage vehicles

The Traverse is especially susceptible on 2013–2016 Lambda models because Chevrolet used a slightly thinner ground strap on those years that corrodes faster in salt-belt climates (this is the same strap-gauge issue as on the Malibu).

Symptoms on the Traverse

  • ABS and StabiliTrak / Traction Control lights on together
  • "Service StabiliTrak" message on the DIC
  • Cruise control will not engage — cruise disables when EBCM flags a fault
  • Hill-start assist disabled on 2014+ Traverses
  • Third-row entertainment system may reboot at the moment C0561 trips — a tell-tale sign of BCM ground drift affecting multiple modules
  • Engine and transmission operate normally — C0561 is purely a chassis-systems disable

Traverse-Specific Diagnosis Order

  1. Scan all modules for codes. Look for U0100 (lost ECM comms), U0101 (lost TCM), U0121 (lost EBCM), or C0242 stored alongside C0561. The combination tells you where in the CAN bus the issue sits.
  2. Battery load test. Traverses with rear entertainment systems, heated seats, and other auxiliary loads drain batteries hard. A 4-year-old battery below 600 CCA will routinely trigger C0561 on cold starts.
  3. Inspect the BCM ground strap under the steering column (Lambda) or near the left kick panel (C1XX). Loose bolt + oxidized terminal = classic Traverse fault.
  4. Measure voltage drop across the ground strap with engine running. Should be ≤0.1V. ≥0.3V = failing strap.
  5. Check the ECM-to-EBCM connector at the firewall for corrosion on salt-exposed vehicles.

Step-by-Step Fix: Traverse BCM Ground Strap

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Wait 60 seconds.
  2. Lie on your back on the driver's-side sill, head under the dash, looking up at the steering column support.
  3. Locate the braided ground strap — about 10cm long on Lambda Traverses, bolted with a 10mm head to the column support bracket above the brake pedal.
  4. Remove the 10mm bolt. Use penetrating oil if rusted.
  5. Clean both surfaces with 80-grit sandpaper down to bare metal. Strap terminal AND mounting surface on the bracket.
  6. Apply dielectric grease thinly to prevent future corrosion.
  7. Reinstall the bolt, torque to 15 ft-lb. Do not over-tighten — captive nut strips easily on Lambda Traverses past 150,000 miles.
  8. Reconnect the battery.
  9. Clear all stored codes with an OBD-II scanner.
  10. Drive 20 minutes mixed. Lights should stay off.

Repair Cost on the Traverse

FixDIYShop
Ground strap cleanup$0$100–$160 (1 hr labor)
Replacement strap (GM 15864010)$8–$12$140–$200
Battery replacement (group 48 AGM)$160–$240$240–$340 installed
ECM-to-EBCM connector clean$5$140–$220
BCM replacement + dealer programming$200–$380 + $180 programming$650–$1,100

Do NOT let a shop replace the BCM on your Traverse without a proper diagnosis. We see this shop upsell repeatedly — a $700+ BCM replacement when a 30-minute ground strap clean would have fixed it. Insist that the shop document voltage drop across the ground strap and the main battery load test before approving BCM replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Traverse fail state inspection with C0561 stored?

In most US states, yes — the ABS light being on causes a safety inspection failure. Emissions-only tests pass.

Can I drive my Traverse with C0561 active?

Yes, at normal speeds for short distances. Base brakes and steering work. You lose ABS, traction control, StabiliTrak, and on 2014+ Traverses, hill-start assist. Avoid ice and heavy rain until fixed.

Does the Traverse share the same fix as the GMC Acadia?

Yes — Traverse and Acadia are platform siblings (Lambda 2009–2017, C1XX 2018+). Same BCM, same EBCM, same ground strap location, same diagnosis order. See our GMC Acadia C0561 guide for the sibling perspective.

Does the Traverse High Country or Premier trim have a different fix?

No. The Premier and High Country trims share the same chassis electronics as the base LS / LT. Trim level does not change BCM or EBCM layout.

My Traverse's C0561 appears only in cold weather — why?

Classic ground-drift symptom. Cold weather contracts metal, widening gaps in oxidized ground connections. Clean and grease the strap, and this pattern usually disappears.

Does the Saturn Outlook share the Traverse's C0561 fix?

Yes — Saturn Outlook (2007–2010) shares the Lambda platform with the Traverse. Same BCM, same EBCM, same ground strap. Even though Saturn is defunct, the fix is still the $0 ground cleanup.
