SEAT Leon Fuel Cut-Off Switch Location & Reset (1999-2020)
Drashco
SEAT Leon fuel cut-off switch (cortacorriente combustible) location: Behind the passenger-side kick panel on Mk1 (1M, 1999–2005). Behind the glove box on Mk2 (1P, 2005–2012) TDI diesel only. Mk3 (5F, 2012–2020) and Mk4 (KL, 2020+) use ECU-controlled crash cut on all variants.
Reset: Press the red plunger until it clicks flush. Turn ignition ON for 10 seconds, then start.
The SEAT Leon is the Spanish member of the VAG PQ34 / PQ35 / MQB family — sister model to the VW Golf, Skoda Octavia, and Audi A3. Identical inertia switch hardware, identical locations, identical reset procedure across all four cars. If your Leon cranks but won't fire after a kerb strike, this guide tells you exactly where to look (or whether you need a VCDS scanner).
In this guide:
What the Leon Inertia Switch Does
The mechanical fuel cut-off (SEAT workshop term: cortacorriente combustible) interrupts power to the fuel pump in a crash. Sealed cylinder, weighted ball, magnetic detent — sudden deceleration trips it and the engine stalls within seconds. Same hardware as VW Golf, Skoda Octavia, Audi A3. Cross-make overview: master fuel cut-off switch guide.
Location by Generation
| Generation | Years | Engine | Switch Location |
| Leon Mk1 (1M) | 1999–2005 | All | Behind passenger-side kick panel; 5cm black cylinder, red plunger up |
| Leon Mk2 (1P) | 2005–2012 | TDI diesel | Behind passenger-side glove box (drop the box, switch is firewall upper-right on LHD) |
| Leon Mk2 (1P) | 2005–2012 | Petrol (1.4 TSI, 1.8 TSI, 2.0 TSI, Cupra) | No mechanical switch — ECU crash cut |
| Leon Mk3 (5F) | 2012–2020 | All | No mechanical switch — ECU-controlled crash cut |
| Leon Mk4 (KL) | 2020+ | All | No mechanical switch |
| Leon SC (3-door) / ST (estate) | — | — | Same as Leon hatch for that generation |
| Cupra (any gen, branded as standalone since 2018) | — | — | Same as base Leon — performance variants share chassis electronics |
| Leon e-Hybrid (PHEV) | 2020+ | — | No mechanical switch — ECU + BMS crash cut |
Mk1 (1M) — Passenger Kick Panel
Slide the passenger seat back. Open the passenger door. Pull the plastic kick panel toward the centre of the cab — 3 plastic clips release, no screws. Switch is a 5cm black cylinder on the firewall, red button on top. If the button is raised, it's tripped.
Mk2 TDI (1P diesel) — Behind Glove Box
Empty the glove box. Squeeze the side stops inward. Let the box swing down. Switch on firewall upper-right (LHD) / upper-left (RHD UK / Ireland / Australia). Red plunger faces up.
Step-by-Step Reset
- Turn ignition OFF, remove key.
- Access the switch per the location guide above.
- Press the red plunger straight down firmly until it clicks and sits flush.
- Turn ignition to position II (ON, not start). Listen for the fuel pump prime — 2-second whirr from the rear.
- Wait 10 seconds for fuel rail pressure.
- Start the engine. Should fire in 1–3 cranks.
Why It Trips Without a Crash
- Hard pothole strikes at speed
- Kerb strikes while parking, especially on Cupra trims with stiffer suspension
- Speed bumps taken too fast
- Dropping off a jack during a tyre change
- Older Mk1 (1M): internal magnet weakens past 20 years, switch trips on normal vibration. Replace if recurring.
Mk3 / Mk4 — No Mechanical Switch (What To Do)
From 2012 onwards (Mk3 5F), SEAT removed the mechanical inertia switch entirely. Crash detection is handled by the airbag control module which sends a CAN message to the engine ECU to disable the fuel pump.
If your Mk3 / Mk4 Leon cranks but won't start after a hard knock:
- Connect a VCDS / OBDeleven / VAG-compatible scanner.
- Read codes from the SDM (airbag) module — look for crash event codes.
- Read codes from the engine ECU — fuel-pump-disabled or "crash signal active" code will be stored.
- Clear codes from BOTH modules. Some require dealer-level VCDS due to immobilizer integration.
- Cycle ignition; engine should fire in 1–3 cranks.
Independent VAG specialist clears codes for €40–€80. SEAT/Cupra dealer charges €100–€180.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the fuel cut-off switch on a 2008 SEAT Leon?
The 2008 Leon is Mk2 (1P). If TDI diesel, behind the passenger-side glove box. If petrol — there's no mechanical switch; you need a VAG-compatible scanner to clear the crash code from the ECU.
Does the SEAT Leon Cupra have an inertia switch?
Cupra trims share the same chassis electronics as the base Leon for that generation. Mk1 Cupra = behind kick panel. Mk2 Cupra (petrol) = no mechanical switch (ECU). Mk3 Cupra and Mk4 Cupra = no mechanical switch.
Is the Leon switch the same part as the VW Golf?
Yes — same VAG part number across the platform. Leon Mk1 / Golf Mk4 / Octavia Mk1 / Audi A3 Mk1 share the same switch. Mk2 TDI variants are also identical. See our VW Golf inertia switch guide and Audi A3 guide for cross-references.
Does the Leon SC (3-door) and ST (estate) share the same switch location?
Yes. Both share the same dashboard and firewall layout as the Leon hatch. Same switch, same location for that generation.
Cupra is a separate brand now (2018+) — does that change anything?
No. Cupra Leon (post-2018 standalone branding) and SEAT Leon Cupra (pre-2018) both share the chassis with the base SEAT Leon for that generation. Same chassis electronics, same fuel cut-off behavior.
Does the Leon e-Hybrid have an inertia switch?
No. Leon e-Hybrid (Mk4, 2020+) uses ECU-controlled crash cut for the fuel side and BMS crash cut for the high-voltage electric side, both triggered by the airbag control module.
