Audi A3 Fuel Cut-Off Switch Location & Reset (1996-2020)
Drashco
Audi A3 fuel cut-off switch (Kraftstoffabschaltung) location: Behind the passenger-side kick panel on Mk1 (8L, 1996–2003). Behind the glove box on Mk2 (8P, 2003–2012) TDI diesel only. Mk3 (8V, 2012–2020) and Mk4 (8Y, 2020+) use ECU-controlled crash cut on all variants — no mechanical switch.
Reset: Press the red plunger until it clicks flush. Turn ignition ON for 10 seconds, then start.
The Audi A3 shares the VAG PQ34 / PQ35 / MQB platform with the VW Golf, Skoda Octavia, and SEAT Leon. That means identical inertia switch behavior across all four models — same hardware, same locations, same reset procedure. If your A3 cranks but won't fire after a kerb strike, this guide tells you exactly where to look (or whether you need a VCDS scanner instead).

What the Audi A3 Inertia Switch Does
The mechanical fuel cut-off (VAG term: Kraftstoffabschaltung) is a passive safety device wired in series with the fuel pump power supply. A weighted ball inside the sealed cylinder is held by a magnetic detent; sudden deceleration dislodges the ball and breaks the circuit. Engine runs for 2–3 seconds on residual rail pressure, then stalls.
VAG used this design across Golf, Octavia, A3, Leon, Bora, Jetta, and Passat. For the cross-model overview see our master fuel cut-off switch guide covering 20+ makes.
Location by Generation
| Generation | Years | Engine | Switch Location |
| A3 Mk1 (8L) | 1996–2003 | All | Behind passenger-side kick panel; small black cylinder on firewall, red plunger up |
| A3 Mk2 (8P) | 2003–2012 | TDI diesel | Behind passenger-side glove box (drop the box, switch is firewall upper-right on LHD) |
| A3 Mk2 (8P) | 2003–2012 | Petrol (1.4 TFSI, 1.8 TFSI, 2.0 TFSI, 3.2 V6) | No mechanical switch — ECU crash cut from this generation |
| A3 Mk3 (8V) | 2012–2020 | All | No mechanical switch — ECU-controlled crash cut |
| A3 Mk4 (8Y) | 2020+ | All | No mechanical switch |
| A3 Sportback / Cabriolet | — | — | Same as A3 hatch for that generation |
| S3 / RS3 (any gen) | — | — | Same as base A3 — performance variants share chassis electronics |
| e-tron / TFSI e (PHEV) | 2020+ | — | No mechanical switch — BMS handles crash cut |
Mk1 (8L) — Passenger Kick Panel
Slide the passenger seat all the way back. Open the passenger door. The kick panel is the plastic trim piece to the right of where the passenger's feet rest. It has 3 plastic clips that release by pulling toward the centre of the cab — no screws. Pull firmly. Behind the panel: 5cm black cylinder on the firewall, red button on top.
Mk2 TDI (8P diesel) — Behind Glove Box
Empty the glove box. Squeeze the side stops inward. Let the box swing down. The switch is mounted on the firewall upper-right on LHD A3s (upper-left on RHD UK / Ireland / Australia). Red plunger faces up.
Step-by-Step Reset
- Turn ignition OFF, remove key.
- Access the switch per the location guide above.
- Press the red plunger straight down firmly until it clicks and sits flush.
- Turn ignition to position II (ON, not start). Listen for the fuel pump prime — 2-second whirr from the rear.
- Wait 10 seconds for fuel rail pressure.
- Start the engine. Should fire in 1–3 cranks.
Why It Trips Without a Crash
- Hard pothole strikes at speed, especially on S3 / RS3 with stiffer suspension
- Kerb strikes while parking
- Speed bumps taken too fast
- Dropping off a jack during a tyre change
- Older Mk1 (8L) past 20 years: internal magnet weakens, switch trips on normal road vibration. Replace if recurring.
Mk3 / Mk4 — No Mechanical Switch (What To Do)
From 2012 onwards (Mk3 8V), Audi removed the mechanical inertia switch entirely. Crash detection is handled by the airbag control module (ACSM / SDM) which sends a CAN-bus message to the engine ECU to disable the fuel pump. After an airbag deployment OR hard impact that triggers the SDM, the ECU stores a crash code and refuses to enable the fuel pump until cleared.
If your Mk3 / Mk4 A3 cranks but won't start after a hard knock:
- Connect a VCDS / OBDeleven / Audi-compatible scanner.
- Read codes from the SDM (airbag) module — look for crash event codes.
- Read codes from the engine ECU — fuel-pump-disabled or "crash signal active" code will be stored.
- Clear codes from BOTH modules (some require dealer-level VCDS due to immobilizer integration on newer A3s).
- Cycle ignition; engine should fire in 1–3 cranks.
Independent VAG specialist clears codes for €40–€80. Audi dealer charges €120–€200.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the fuel cut-off switch on a 2010 Audi A3?
The 2010 A3 is Mk2 (8P). If TDI diesel, behind the passenger-side glove box. If petrol — there's no mechanical switch; you need a VAG-compatible scanner to clear the crash code from the ECU.
Does the Audi S3 / RS3 have an inertia switch?
S3 / RS3 share the same chassis electronics as the base A3 for that generation. Mk1/Mk2 TDI = behind glove box. Mk2 petrol S3, Mk3 RS3, Mk4 RS3 = no mechanical switch (ECU crash cut).
Is the A3 switch the same part as the VW Golf?
Yes — same VAG part number across the platform. A3 Mk1 / Golf Mk4 / Octavia Mk1 / Leon Mk1 share the same switch. Mk2 TDI variants are also identical. See our VW Golf inertia switch guide for cross-reference.
My Audi A3 Sportback has a different layout — is the switch in the same place?
Yes. Sportback (5-door) and Cabriolet share the same dashboard and firewall layout as the standard 3-door A3. Same switch, same location for that generation.
Does the A3 e-tron PHEV or e-tron BEV have an inertia switch?
The pre-2020 A3 e-tron PHEV uses an ECU-controlled crash cut for both the fuel side and the electric side. The BEV variants (Q4 e-tron based on MEB platform) have no fuel system at all; the BMS handles crash cut.
Can I bypass the inertia switch on my older A3?
Technically yes by bridging the connector terminals, but this removes the post-crash safety cut — fuel will continue to spray from ruptured lines after a real accident. Not recommended for any road-going car.
