C0561 on a Buick Enclave means: ABS and StabiliTrak disabled because the EBCM received invalid serial data from the BCM on the CAN bus.
Fix on the Enclave: 70% of cases resolve with a BCM ground strap cleanup. Cost: $0. Time: 30 minutes.

The Buick Enclave shares its Lambda (2008–2017) and C1XX (2018+) platforms with the Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia, and the defunct Saturn Outlook — which means the C0561 fault behaves identically across all four. On Enclaves specifically, we see C0561 most commonly on 2011–2017 models past 90,000 miles, with the same BCM-ground root cause as the other Lambda SUVs.

In this guide:

What C0561 Means on an Enclave

C0561 in the Enclave's EBCM reads as "System Disabled Information Stored — Invalid Serial Data Received." The ABS module attempted to communicate with the BCM on the CAN bus, got corrupted data or nothing, and fell back to a safe-disabled state. ABS, traction control, and StabiliTrak all go offline until the fault clears.

This is the same underlying fault as on the C0561 master guide, the Chevy Traverse, and the GMC Acadia. Because the Enclave shares the Lambda/C1XX platforms with these siblings, the mechanics and diagnosis are identical.

Enclave Generation Differences

GenerationYearsPlatformPrimary C0561 Cause
Enclave 1st gen2008–2012LambdaBCM ground strap corrosion (70%); battery voltage drift (20%)
Enclave 1st gen facelift2013–2017LambdaSame — ground strap past 100,000 miles
Enclave 2nd gen2018–2024C1XXImproved routing but still fails at battery-to-chassis strap on higher-mileage Enclaves
Enclave Avenir (luxury trim)2018+C1XXSame as base Enclave — trim does not change chassis electronics

Symptoms on the Enclave

  • ABS and StabiliTrak lights on together
  • "Service StabiliTrak" message in the DIC
  • Cruise control refuses to engage or kicks off during a drive
  • Hill-start assist disabled on 2014+ Enclaves
  • Adaptive cruise control disabled on 2018+ Enclaves with that option
  • QuietTuning cabin-noise system may behave oddly — it shares CAN bus data with the EBCM on Enclave
  • Engine and transmission operate normally

Enclave-Specific Diagnosis

  1. Scan all modules for codes. Look for U0100 (lost ECM), U0101 (lost TCM), U0121 (lost EBCM), or C0242 alongside C0561.
  2. Battery load test. Enclaves with heated/cooled seats, rear entertainment, and other auxiliary loads drain batteries hard. A 4+ year battery below 600 CCA routinely triggers C0561.
  3. BCM ground strap inspection. Under the steering column on Lambda Enclaves. Loose bolt + oxidized terminal = textbook fault.
  4. Voltage drop check. Across the ground strap with engine running — should be ≤0.1V. ≥0.3V means the strap is failing.
  5. ECM-to-EBCM connector at the firewall — check for green oxide on pins, particularly on salt-exposed Enclaves.

Step-by-Step Fix: Enclave BCM Ground Strap

  1. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Wait 60 seconds.
  2. Lie on your back on the driver-side sill with head under the dash, looking up at the steering column support.
  3. Locate the braided ground strap — about 10cm long on Lambda Enclaves, bolted with a 10mm head to the column support bracket above the brake pedal.
  4. Remove the 10mm bolt. Penetrating oil if rusted.
  5. Clean both mating surfaces with 80-grit sandpaper down to bare metal. Strap terminal AND the mounting surface.
  6. Apply dielectric grease thinly.
  7. Reinstall the bolt, torque 15 ft-lb. Do not over-tighten.
  8. Reconnect battery. Clear all codes.
  9. Drive 20 minutes mixed. Lights should stay off.

Repair Cost on the Enclave

FixDIYShop
Ground strap cleanup$0$100–$160
Replacement strap$8–$12$140–$200
Battery replacement (group 48 AGM)$160–$240$240–$340 installed
BCM replacement + dealer programming$200–$380 + $180 programming$700–$1,200

As with the Traverse and Acadia, do not accept a BCM replacement without a proper diagnosis first. The ground-strap cleanup resolves 70% of cases for zero parts cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Enclave fail state inspection with C0561 active?

In states with combined safety + emissions inspections, yes — the ABS light triggers a safety failure. Emissions-only tests pass.

Can I drive my Enclave with C0561 active?

Yes at normal speeds, short distances. Base brakes and steering work. You lose ABS, traction control, StabiliTrak, and hill-start assist. Avoid ice and heavy rain.

Does the Enclave Avenir have a different fix?

No. The Avenir luxury trim shares the same BCM, EBCM, and ground layout as the base Enclave. Trim level does not affect chassis electronics.

Does the Enclave share the same C0561 fix as the Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia?

Yes — all three are Lambda (2008–2017) or C1XX (2018+) platform siblings with identical electronics. Same BCM, same EBCM, same ground strap location. Cross-reference our Traverse and Acadia guides for sibling perspectives.

My Enclave's C0561 returns every 6 months — normal?

No — a proper ground strap cleanup should hold for years. If the code returns within months, either the cleaning was not thorough (paint or oxide remained between surfaces), the strap itself is broken internally (replace it), or you have a separate battery / connector issue compounding the ground fault.

Is the Enclave's C0561 covered under GM's emissions warranty?

No. C0561 is a chassis DTC, not an emissions code. Federal 8-year/80,000-mile emissions warranty does not cover it. Inside the 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, the repair is free at a Buick dealer.
