Ford Transit inertia switch (fuel cut-off switch) location: Driver-side footwell behind the kick panel on Mk6 / Mk7 (2000–2014). Behind the passenger-side glove box on Mk8 (2014–2023) and the current Transit Custom.
Reset: Press the red plunger until it clicks flush. Turn ignition ON for 10 seconds, then crank.

The Ford Transit is the UK's best-selling commercial vehicle and has been for five decades — which means fleet managers, courier drivers, and self-employed tradespeople run into the inertia switch regularly, often while loading pallets into the cargo area. A pallet truck bumping the load floor at the wrong angle can trip the switch and leave you stranded with a van that cranks but won't fire.

This guide covers every Transit generation from 2000 Mk6 through the current 2024 model, plus Transit Custom, Connect, and Courier.

In this guide:

What the Transit Inertia Switch Does

The inertia switch is a sealed mechanical cut-out between the ignition supply and the fuel pump. A weighted ball inside is held in a magnetic detent; sudden deceleration — crash, kerb strike, hard pothole, pallet impact — dislodges the ball and breaks the circuit. Engine runs for 2–3 seconds on residual rail pressure, then stalls. It is a passive safety device preventing fuel spray from ruptured lines after a real crash.

Ford has used this switch design across Transit, Focus, Fiesta, Ranger, and the US F-series for decades. For the cross-make overview, see our master fuel cut-off switch guide covering 20+ makes.

Location by Transit Variant

VariantYearsLocation
Transit Mk6 (VE83)2000–2006Driver-side footwell, behind the lower kick panel. Pull the trim panel down to expose. Red button on firewall
Transit Mk72006–2014Same as Mk6 — driver-side kick panel. Facelift models (2013–2014) may have an extra trim screw
Transit Mk8 (full-size) / Transit Custom2014–2023Behind the passenger-side glove box. Drop the glove box to access. Switch on firewall upper-right on LHD / upper-left on RHD
Transit Mk8 facelift / 2024+2024+Mostly ECU-controlled crash cut on higher trims; base panel vans still have behind-glove-box switch
Transit Connect Mk12002–2013Driver-side footwell, behind kick panel (shares chassis with Focus Mk1)
Transit Connect Mk22013–2023Behind passenger-side glove box (shares with Focus Mk3)
Transit Courier2014+Behind passenger-side glove box

Mk6 / Mk7 Transit — Driver-Side Kick Panel

Open the driver's door. The lower kick panel sits beneath the steering column, to the left of the pedal cluster (on LHD). It is held by two or three plastic clips plus one Phillips screw at the top. Remove the screw, pull the panel down firmly. The switch is mounted to the firewall at chest height with two wires going to a connector on the side. Red button up.

Mk8 Transit / Transit Custom — Behind the Glove Box

Empty the glove box completely. Close the right-side damper. Squeeze the glove box side walls inward to release the stops and let it hang down. The switch sits on the firewall, upper-right on LHD vans (upper-left on UK RHD). Red button facing up. On Transit Custom and Mk8 panel vans with a bulkhead fitted, you may need to remove one trim piece above the glove box to reach fully.

Step-by-Step Reset

  1. Turn ignition OFF. Remove the key (or foot off brake for keyless).
  2. Access the switch per the location guide above.
  3. Press the red plunger straight down firmly until it clicks and sits flush. Single firm press.
  4. Turn ignition to ON. Listen for the fuel pump prime — 2-second whirr from the rear of the van.
  5. Wait 10 seconds for the fuel rail to pressurize.
  6. Start the engine. Should fire within 1–3 cranks.

For Fleet Operators: Driver Training

A 15-minute training session pays back the first time a driver avoids a breakdown callout. Key points:

  • What trips it: kerb strikes, hard potholes, pallet-truck bumps during loading, forklift contact with the bumper, dropping heavy items into the cargo area, slamming the rear doors on a fully-loaded van
  • Symptoms: van cranks normally but will not start; no dashboard warning light (inertia switch is not connected to any warning)
  • Two-minute fix: specific location for your Transit variant, how to press the red plunger, how to verify by listening for the fuel prime
  • When to call the workshop: plunger is already flush but engine still will not start (indicates a different fault), or the switch trips more than once a week (worn switch, needs replacement)

Print a simple laminated card with a location diagram for each van's glove box. £2 of laminator plastic prevents hundreds in callout fees.

Still Won't Start After Reset

  1. Fuel pump fuse. Mk6/Mk7 Transit: fuse 15 (20A) in engine-bay fusebox. Mk8 / Custom: F34 (15A) under bonnet.
  2. Fuel pump relay. Swap with an identical unit from the horn or A/C slot. If it fires, replace (£8).
  3. Battery. Transits with tail-lifts, fridges, or work lights drain batteries hard. Below 10V during cranking, the PCM will not enable the pump. Load-test.
  4. 2.2 / 2.4 TDCi diesel: low-pressure fuel pump and fuel filter clog are common past 200,000 km. Also check the fuel-rail pressure sensor connector for corrosion.
  5. Crank position sensor — another common Transit failure past 150,000 km.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the fuel cut-off switch on a 2017 Ford Transit?

Behind the passenger-side glove box. The 2017 Transit is a Mk8 — drop the glove box by squeezing the sides inward, and the switch is on the firewall upper-right on LHD vans.

Does the 2010 Ford Transit have an inertia switch?

Yes — the 2010 Transit is Mk7. The switch is behind the driver-side lower kick panel. Open the driver's door, remove the Phillips screw at the top of the kick panel, and pull it down.

Does the Transit Custom share the same switch location as the full-size Transit?

Yes. Transit Custom (2013+) and full-size Mk8 Transit (2014+) both have the switch behind the passenger-side glove box. Same reset procedure.

Where is the switch on a Transit Connect?

Mk1 Transit Connect (2002–2013): driver-side kick panel (shares chassis with Focus Mk1). Mk2 Transit Connect (2013+): behind the passenger-side glove box.

My Transit trips the switch every time I load heavy pallets — is it faulty?

Probably not faulty in the classic sense — Transits used for pallet work often trip the switch because of repeated lateral impacts during loading. If it trips more than once a week, replace the switch (Ford part 5C16-9341-AA, ~£30). Alternatively, train the loader to back pallets in gently and your callouts will drop sharply.

Does the Transit Courier share the fuel switch with the Transit Custom?

No — Transit Courier shares the Fiesta chassis, so the switch is in a slightly different location inside the glove-box area. Functionally identical reset procedure.

Is the Transit's inertia switch covered under the Ford commercial warranty?

The part itself is covered for the first 3 years / 60,000 miles on new Transits. If it trips and fails to reset properly, a dealer will replace it for free. Outside warranty, a workshop charge for replacement is £80–£150 labour + £30 part.
