Fiat Ducato Fuel Cut-Off Switch Location & Reset
Drashco
Fiat Ducato fuel cut-off switch (interruttore inerziale) location: Passenger-side footwell behind the kick trim on Ducato 230 / 244 (1994–2006). Behind the driver-side glove compartment / lower dash panel on Ducato 250 / 290 (2006+), including current 2024 models and the Peugeot Boxer / Citroën Jumper sisters.
Reset: Press the red plunger until it clicks flush. Turn ignition ON for 10 seconds, then crank.
The Fiat Ducato is Europe's most popular large panel van and motorhome base — shared with the Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper (same van, different badges). It is a loading-bay workhorse, which means it meets plenty of pallet trucks and forklifts, and the inertia switch trips regularly. A motorhome converted on the Ducato chassis is especially prone, thanks to the extra habitation weight shifting around on rough roads.
In this guide:
What the Ducato Inertia Switch Does
The inertia switch (Fiat calls it the interruttore inerziale) is a sealed mechanical cut-out between the ignition supply and the fuel pump. A weighted ball inside is held by a magnetic detent; sudden deceleration dislodges the ball and breaks the circuit. Engine runs briefly on rail pressure, then stalls. It is a passive crash-protection device designed to kill fuel flow after a real accident.
The Ducato 250 platform (2006+) shares everything structural with Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper — same chassis, same dashboard, same inertia switch in the same location. For the cross-make overview, see our master fuel cut-off switch guide for 20+ makes.
Location by Ducato Generation
| Generation | Years | Location |
| Ducato 230 | 1994–2002 | Passenger footwell, behind the lower kick trim. Pull trim toward centre of cab to release clips |
| Ducato 244 | 2002–2006 | Same as 230 — passenger footwell kick trim |
| Ducato 250 | 2006–2014 | Behind the driver-side lower dash panel / kick trim. Remove one Phillips screw near the pedal cluster, pull panel down. Switch on firewall, red button up |
| Ducato 250 facelift (X250) | 2014–2021 | Same as 250 — driver-side lower dash |
| Ducato 290 / 2021+ facelift | 2021–2024 | Same location as 250 — driver-side lower dash. Some Euro-6d variants use ECU-controlled crash cut on higher trims |
| E-Ducato (BEV) | 2020+ | No fuel system — no inertia switch. BMS handles crash cut |
| Peugeot Boxer / Citroën Jumper | 2006+ | Identical to Ducato 250 — driver-side lower dash |
Ducato 250 (2006+) — Driver-Side Lower Dash
Open the driver's door. The lower dash panel sits below the steering column, covering the fuse panel and the pedal cluster. It is held by one Phillips screw near the top-right corner plus two or three plastic clips. Remove the screw, pull the panel down firmly. The inertia switch is mounted on the firewall at chest height, slightly right of the brake pedal (LHD). A 5cm black cylinder with a red plunger on top and two wires going to a connector. If the plunger is raised, the switch has tripped.
Ducato 230 / 244 (1994–2006) — Passenger Footwell
Open the passenger door. Fold back the floor mat and any carpet. The kick panel on the passenger side has 2–3 plastic clips — pull toward the centre of the cab. Switch on the firewall, red button up.
Step-by-Step Reset
- Turn ignition OFF. Remove the key.
- Access the switch per the location guide above.
- Press the red plunger straight down firmly until it clicks and sits flush. Single firm press.
- Turn ignition to ON. Listen for the fuel pump prime — 2-second whirr from the rear of the van.
- Wait 10 seconds for rail pressure.
- Start the engine. Should fire within 1–3 cranks.
Motorhome Owners — Extra Considerations
Motorhomes converted on the Ducato chassis (Hymer, Bürstner, Auto-Trail, Swift, Bailey, etc.) are particularly prone to inertia switch trips:
- Rough or unmade-up site tracks — the combined van + habitation mass hitting a rut generates enough deceleration to trip the switch
- Pitching up hard on a sloped pitch — driving onto ramps with the brake held too firmly
- Water tank weight transfer — a full grey-water tank swinging over a speed bump can add enough force
- Tow-bar impact — even a minor rear-end nudge when reversing onto a hitch
Many experienced motorhome owners carry a printed card with the switch location in the habitation door pocket — the Ducato is the most common motorhome base vehicle in Europe, and this fix saves hours of waiting for roadside assistance at a remote site.
Still Won't Start After Reset
- Fuel pump fuse. Ducato 250: fuse F33 (15A) in engine-bay fusebox. Ducato 230: fuse F27 in dashboard fusebox.
- Fuel pump relay. Swap with identical relay from horn or A/C slot.
- Battery. Motorhome owners: auxiliary habitation loads can drain the starter battery. Check voltage, load-test if older than 4 years.
- 2.3 / 3.0 Multijet diesel: check the fuel-rail pressure sensor and the low-pressure in-tank pump, especially past 200,000 km.
- AdBlue / DEF system on Euro 6 Ducatos — a blocked AdBlue tank can trigger a limp/no-start mode that mimics inertia switch symptoms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the fuel cut-off switch on a 2015 Fiat Ducato?
Driver-side lower dash panel, below the steering column. The 2015 Ducato is a 250 X-series — one Phillips screw at the top of the panel, pull down, and the switch is on the firewall slightly right of the brake pedal.
Does the Peugeot Boxer share the same switch location as the Ducato?
Yes — Ducato 250 (2006+), Peugeot Boxer (2006+), and Citroën Jumper (2006+) are the same van built on the same platform. Same switch, same location (driver-side lower dash), same reset procedure.
My Hymer motorhome won't start after a rough site track — is it the inertia switch?
Very likely. The combination of motorhome weight and rough terrain is the single most common cause of inertia switch trips on Ducato-based motorhomes. Reset procedure as above. If it trips more than once a trip, consider replacing the switch (Fiat part 1351823080, ~€40).
Does the 2023 Ducato still have a mechanical inertia switch?
Base trims yes, higher Euro-6d trims may use ECU-controlled crash cut via airbag signal. Check your handbook — if there is a mention of a "fuel pump cut-off switch location" in the troubleshooting section, you have a mechanical one.
Is the E-Ducato (electric) affected by inertia switch issues?
No. The E-Ducato has no fuel system — the battery management unit handles crash cut via airbag signal. If the E-Ducato will not start after an incident, the fault must be cleared with a scan tool.
Can I replace the Ducato inertia switch myself?
Yes. Disconnect the battery, unplug the old switch connector, remove the mounting bolt, swap in the new unit, reconnect. Total job 15 minutes. Part costs ~€40 from Fiat dealer or ~€20 from aftermarket suppliers on eBay.
